The Wine
Four years ago, our buyer, Leo, secured a special parcel of Barolo. He called it his buying coup of the year. He’s done it again with the 2020 vintage. Piedmont's prized red is known for demanding a high price. However, when a winery (we're forbidden to name) is keen to move a batch fast, it usually comes as a good deal. It’s from a terrific vintage too, variously described as "outstanding” and “another vintage of stellar wines”. The grapes are from the same hillsides as elite names, including the great £65-a-bottle Vajra and the cellar regularly receives high critic scores. It's a mesmerising wine, long aged in barrel. Decant early to allow the mocha, cherry and violet notes to open, or cellar. Ideal with roast meats or truffle risotto.
