Cabalié FAQs
Where is Cabalié made?
The original Cabalié red was created by winemaker Hervé Sabardeil, deep in the wilds of southern France. This reliably sunny region was once home to garrisons of Roman legionaries, and nowadays is treasure trove for old-vine Grenache vines, producing tiny but intensely flavoured grapes.
Hervé had the idea to produce a red in the style the Centurions would have enjoyed in the days of the Roman empire – big, rich and packed with warming, spiced black fruit. It quickly conquered our customers hearts – racking up 1,000s of 5-star reviews and racing up the charts to become our No.1 bestselling red.
The luxury old-vine edition, Cabalié Vieilles Vignes, is from the same part of the world but made from even older vines – all of them at least 100 years old. Then you have Cabalié Origine – which is made only from the two original vineyards behind the first ever vintage of Cabalié. Available only in limited qualities, it’s well worth seeking out.
The Cabalié Blanc and Cabalié Rosé are also from the heart of southern France.
What wines are in the Cabalié family?
Here’s a list of the wines in our popular Cabalié range
- Cabalié – the original Roman red, our No.1 best seller with over 5,500 reviews.
- Cabalié Vielles Vignes – the ‘old-vine’ edition, made with grapes from vines that are all at least 100 years old – even richer and more luxurious than the original.
- Cabalié Origine – a special release made with grapes from the two vineyards that supplied grapes for the first vintage. The vines are all over 100-yeatrs old, so the grapes are exceptionally concentrated and the wine velvety rich.
- Cabalié Blanc – the sister white to our No.1 bestselling red, this is made from a magical mix of Viognier, Muscat and Colombard. Rich, fragrant and zesty fresh, it’s a huge hit in its own right.
- Cabalié Rosé – the newest addition to the range, this is an aromatic pink with vibrant strawberry and grenadine flavours and a hint of pepper.
What grapes are used to make Cabalié?
Cabalié reds are made from a blend of classic southern French varieties, but the main and most important is Grenache. A speciality of southern France and also the southern Rhône, it produces big, rich reds, bursting with ripe, juicy black fruit. Syrah adds elegant blackberry fruit and peppery notes, while Cinsault adds a little freshness and spice.
Cabalié Blanc is made from honeyed, aromatic Viognier, along with Muscat for grapey aromas and Colombard for green apple freshness.
Cabalié Rosé is made from Grenache and Syrah – a classic French combination for this style.
Why is Cabalié so popular?
The original Cabalié was one of our first Black Reds – a style that’s unashamedly big, rich and full flavoured – and so full of dark fruit it’s almost black in colour. Customers seemed to adore the style – and quickly made it our No.1 bestselling red.
Other members of the Cabalié family are big hits too – thanks to winemaker Hervé Sabardeil’s gift for making wines with pure drinking pleasure in mind.
Here are some of our favourite 5-star online reviews for Cabalié:
“When my time comes to shuffle off this mortal coil, this is the wine I want in that final glass. It is simply, utterly, indescribably fantastic.”
“If I could marry a wine then this would be the one.”
“I suspect that it would be very difficult to find a comparable red at even twice the price”
And finally …
“Far the best red wine I've ever had”
