The Wine
Cheval Blanc is one of the very finest estates of the Right Bank, indeed of all Bordeaux. It lies in the NW of Saint-Émilion, on the border of Pomerol, and is firmly in the Premier Grand Cru Classé A category. Pierre Lurton is in overall charge, which is evident in the superb quality of the wine each vintage. It boasts a real medley of soils – gravel, clay and sand – all over an impermeable sedimentary rock, known as crasse de fer and is the most famous wine to feature Cabernet Franc as its star grape. 18 months ageing in new French oak adds to the layers of richness and complexity of this wine, which will need at least a decade of cellaring and ideally more. "Velvety and layered, it's rich and gourmand, with beautifully refined tannins"
