From easy-drinking Pinot Grigio to serious Sancerre, here’s where I’d spend my money on white wine in 2026.

How Much Should You Spend on White Wine?

There’s a lot of white wine to choose from out there. And while that’s a good thing, it can make standing in front of a shelf of bottles feel slightly overwhelming.

Should you stick with the Sauvignon Blanc you already know? Is it worth spending £20 instead of £10? And what actually changes when you move up to £30 or £50?

The good news is that you don’t need to spend a fortune to drink well. There are some brilliant-value whites around the £8–£12 mark, while spending a little more can open the door to more distinctive regions and wines with considerably more complexity.

So, these are the bottles I’d look at depending on what I was buying for: an everyday glass, a dinner with friends, a gift or a genuinely special occasion.

The best white wines under £10

At this price, I’m looking for freshness, balance and plenty of flavour. I’m not expecting layers of complexity – and I don’t think you should either. A good £8 bottle has a job to do: taste good and go nicely with just about anything.

Wolf Point Sauvignon Blanc – Chile
This is the sort of Sauvignon Blanc I’d happily have on standby. Chile is a great place to look when value is the priority, and Wolf Point gives you plenty of fresh citrus and tropical fruit for the money.

I’d drink it with: salads, goat’s cheese or a bowl of crisps before dinner.

Farinelli Pinot Grigio – Italy
If Pinot Grigio is your usual choice, there’s no reason to spend £15 or £20 every time. Farinelli is the bottle I’d buy when I want something uncomplicated and refreshing – particularly for lunch or a sunny afternoon.

I’d drink it with: nothing more complicated than a plate of antipasti.

The best white wines under £15

This is probably the price bracket I recommend most often.

You still have plenty of everyday wines to choose from, but you can start looking beyond the obvious choices. This is the bracket where going off the beaten track can pay dividends, or exploring a style with a curated white wine mixed case. Remember: you don’t want to be wasting a penny you’re spending on the wine to pay for a brand’s next marketing campaign!

The Gooseberry Bush – South Africa
It’s hard to beat The Gooseberry Bush for value.It’s why, every year, this South African star outsells any of our other whites – even New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc – by a long chalk. It’s crisp, uncomplicated and always delicious.

Best for: stocking up, casual drinking and discovering something a little different.

W/O Organic Lucido 2025 – Italy
Crowd-pleasing style in a genuinely beautiful bottle – this really ticks all the boxes for the price.

W/O Organic Lucido is an organic white from Sicily, made from the local Lucido grape. It's fresh, bright and easy-drinking, making it a great choice for entertaining when you don’t know exactly what everyone drinks. It’s also a popular choice for weddings. And then there’s the bottle. The recycled glass makes it a genuine talking point when you bring it to the table, so it feels a little more special than the price suggests.

Best for: curious drinkers who want to move beyond Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio – and anyone looking for a beautiful bottle that's guaranteed to get people talking.

The best white wines under £20

This is my favourite part of the white wine market. Proportionally, a lot more of the price is going on the liquid in the bottle… and that means the winemaker can do more. That’s when white wine gets really interesting. But it’s important to know what style of white wine you prefer before you spend your money here. If you don’t love rich, rounded whites then spending more on the bottle is only going to lead to disappointment.

Villa Broglia Gavi di Gavi – Italy
Gavi is made from the Cortese grape in Piedmont, and it’s one of those wines I think deserves to be better known. It’s crisp and elegant without being austere, making it a lovely alternative to Sauvignon Blanc when you want something fresh but a little more restrained.

I’d buy this for: a dinner party where I want something that feels a little more thoughtful than the usual Sauvignon.

La Voûte – France
La Voûte is a Grand Cru-style Chardonnay that rivals expensive Meursault, one of Burgundy’s most renowned whites. It’s elegant, with intensely ripe fruit, mineral freshness and luxurious creamy richness – a must-taste for lovers of fine white wines. Winemaker Mark Hoddy goes all out for his pride and joy – barrel-fermented, lees-stirred and aged in fine French oak. And yet the value remains extraordinary.

Best for: Chardonnay lovers looking for a taste of Burgundy-style luxury without the Meursault price tag.

The best white wines under £30

At £20–£30, I stop thinking about finding a “good bottle” and start looking for something I’d like to sit down and savour. This is dinner-party territory – when many of us will reach for classic regions such as Sancerre and Chablis.

Domaine Michel Thomas Sancerre Silex – France
This is where Sauvignon Blanc starts to feel rather different. Sancerre is Sauvignon Blanc from France’s Loire Valley, but the style is generally much less overtly tropical than a typical Marlborough Sauvignon. The very best Sancerres come from special flint-rich soils known as silex, and Michel Thomas’ top vineyards, within view of the hilltop town itself, epitomise the style.

I’d drink it with: seafood, goat’s cheese or simply as an aperitif.

Altos R Pigeage Blanco Rioja 2024 – Spain
If you think Rioja just means luxurious red wine, think again. This is a personal favourite of mine that I always get in for special occasions. Altos R Pigeage Blanco is a rich, generously textured white Rioja made from Viura and designed for the dinner table. This is the sort of white I'd choose when I want a bit more weight and depth. It's ripe and rounded, with the freshness to keep everything balanced, making it particularly good with richer food. It's also a lovely reminder that Spanish white wine deserves much more attention.

Best for: those looking for a complex glass that isn’t Chardonnay.

The best white wines under £50

At this price, you’re no longer simply buying a bottle of wine – you’re buying an experience. This is where provenance, winemaking and the character of the vineyard really start to show, and where you want to linger rather than simply pour. These are the bottles I’d bring out for a special dinner or a thoughtful gift.

Dr. Loosen Lösnicher Forsterlay Riesling Grosses Gewächs – Germany
This is the sort of bottle that makes spending £40 on white wine feel worthwhile. It’s a serious step up in precision, structure and complexity. “Grosses Gewächs” indicates a top-level dry German wine from a designated site. This is a very different proposition from an inexpensive, fruity Riesling – more savoury, structured and serious.

It’s the sort of bottle I’d open with a good meal and give plenty of time in the glass.

Best for: really tasting the step-up that vineyard, winemaking and provenance can make.

Stellenrust Series Rare Mothership Chenin Blanc 2024 – South Africa
Few estates lavish quite as much care on a wine as Stellenrust has on this one. Made from old bush vines in Stellenbosch and given plenty of time in oak and on its lees, it’s rich, layered and beautifully textured. It’s a serious bottle, but the value is exceptional because it’s so unusual.

This isn’t another predictable fine wine – it’s a chance to discover just how extraordinary South African Chenin Blanc can be.

Best for: adventurous white-wine drinkers looking for something genuinely different from the usual suspects.
