The Wine
Westend Estate was founded in 1945 by Francesco and Elizabeth Calabria, who arrived from Italy in 1927. They purchased five acres at the western end of Griffith in Riverina and named the cellar Calabria Wines. These days their son Bill is at the helm, and he is proving a steady steersman, having won over 30 Trophies since 2000 at regional, national and international shows. He modestly claims it’s all about having the best fruit. “I don’t have a single contract with any grower,” explains Bill. “They’re all friends, so we base everything on trust and a handshake.” He certainly manages to pack loads of flavour into every wine he makes. Ripe fruit and zesty freshness, this white is a delicious drop solo or with pork, chicken or spicy Thai food.
