A taste of Bordeaux’s exceptional 2018 vintage in this appealing, 92-point satellite Saint-Emilion claret. Predominately Merlot, Vieux Château Saint André is ripe, juicy and exceptionally smooth. Drinking beautifully right now, but will cellar.

The Wine
Montagne is a Saint Emilion ‘satellite’, a neighbouring village making wines that mirror the Saint Emilion Grands Crus. Less well known, they offer exceptional value, particularly in outstanding vintages like 2018. Montagne, says Robert Parker in his book ‘Bordeaux’, is where you consistently find “some of the deepest, richest wines” and Vieux Château Saint André is a luscious example. It’s a classic combination of Merlot and both Cabernets, with the requisite period of oak ageing to ensure a smooth and harmonious cuvée. Owner Jean-Claude Berrouet was the Moueix winemaker for years and responsible for countless headline grabbing wines. Decant this classic an hour in advance to allow it to open out, then serve with roast lamb or beef.
