The Story Behind the Bottle
The traditional Tuscan winescape changed dramatically in the early 1970s. Italy’s oldest and most famous wine dynasty, Antinori, caused controversy by blending ‘Bordeaux imposter’ Cabernet Sauvignon with Chianti’s Sangiovese, then ageing the wine in small French barriques. Heresy to some; genius to others. Tignanello was so successful it gave rise to a host of copycat wines known collectively as Super Tuscans. Tignanello is produced only in the best vintages, exclusively from grapes grown within a large, single vineyard at 390 metres altitude, and aged 14 months in French and Hungarian, half-new oak casks. Plush with dark fruit, hints of spice and sweet earth, the 2022 is still tight, with promising length and great cellaring potential.
