The Wine
The traditional Tuscan winescape changed dramatically in the early 1970s. Italy’s oldest and most famous wine dynasty, Antinori, caused controversy by blending ‘Bordeaux imposter’ Cabernet Sauvignon with Chianti’s Sangiovese, then ageing the wine in small French barriques. Heresy to some; genius to others. Tignanello was so successful it gave rise to a host of copycat wines known collectively as Super Tuscans. Tignanello is produced only in the best vintages, exclusively from grapes grown within a single vineyard at 400 metres altitude, and aged in French and Hungarian casks. Lushly fruity with hints of spice and sweet earth, this smooth complex 2017 will easily cellar for 15 to 20 years, yet can be enjoyed now with fine Italian cuisine.
