The Wine
In the late 1840s California became the epicentre of the famous Gold Rush. Today, many of the districts where the richest pickings were found are no longer known for gold prospecting but for producing excellent quality wines instead. Winemaker Reed Renaudin selected the grapes for this red from 10 to 30 year old vineyard sites within these special areas of Lodi. He has used mostly Zinfandel, known for its big, spicy, black fruit character. Durif adds elegant blackcurrant notes, while Malbec brings rich damson flavours, and a little Syrah notes of spice. Maturation in French and US oak barrels, a third of them new, has rounded the wine off, adding silky tannins and nuances of cedar. Perfect with roast lamb, beef or a beany casserole.
