Usually seen as an intense punchy red, here Sicily’s star Nero d’Avola makes a mineral-fresh rosato. Flushed with ripe cherry notes, fragrant blossom and wild herbs, this crisp, citrusy pink from the high hills of Salemi makes for a refreshing sip.

The Wine
Sicily’s sleepy town of Poggioreale, like many others on this sunny island, has a rich history of winegrowing and winemaking. It’s where winemaker Dino Taschetta grew up and his grandfather had vineyards. Yet in 1968 an earthquake reduced it to ruins. A new town was built further down the hill and the vineyards above the old village were neglected for decades. With many of the island’s oldest vines grubbed up, Dino set out to discover what had become of his grandfather's old plantings. Running a bit wild, they were producing jewel-like grapes that he recognised had great potential. And here it is, realised in this delightful, Nero d'Avola rosato. Cherries, berries, wild herbs and flowers - it's a pink to pore over and great with seafood.
