The Wine
Malbec may be synonymous with fine Argentine reds, but in fact France may rightly claim this grape as its own. Tannins used to be a problem with Malbec but Argentina’s winemakers showed the French these could be tamed. Now Malbec producers in South West France are also crafting reds that show rich fruit and only a minimum of tannins. This temptingly tasty wine is named after the medieval Pont Valentré in Cahors in the heart of Malbec country. The bridge took so long to build, the builder made a pact with the Devil to ensure its completion, so the story goes. In the 1870s masons added a sculpture of the Devil to one of its towers, thereby imprisoning him. This velvety smooth Malbec is a joy with French classics like cassoulet, duck or steak.
