The Wine
Pieropan “makes impossibly delicious Soave Classicos” (Wine Advocate) of the finest quality, in another flavour realm to that of other estates. The founder, in 1880, was Leonildo Pieropan, a doctor in Soave. His grandson, also Leonildo, was “one of Italy’s most gifted and knowledgeable winemakers” (Vinous). Within their 30 hectares the family have three single cru vineyards, from which they make flagship wines Calvarino and La Rocca. Aged up to 60 years old, vines are tended organically with the utmost care. Wine Advocate talks of this wine’s “power and persistence”, “crisp mineral definition” and “peach, pear, honey, dried herb and distant exotic spice”. In magnum, it ages even better. A showstopper at a dinner party for discerning guests.
