The Wine
The Naegele Bonnet family have been growing vines in Hambach since 1796 – you may have met their delicious Riesling already. Over the years they’ve gained a considerable reputation for their wines. Today the estate’s run by the seventh generation, husband and wife Eva and Ralf Bonnet, Ralf marrying into the property from the winemaking village Haardt, next door. Although the Pfalz is known for rich Rieslings, it also has the warmth to bring other varieties, such as Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Gewurztraminer, to full ripeness. This white uses entirely spicy Gewurz – only 3% of the estate’s plantings – fermented in old oak barrels to lend weight rather than any oak flavour. Enjoy this Gewurz solo or alongside sauced salmon or spicy dishes.
