The Wine
Sherry has been enjoying a well deserved upturn in popularity thanks to magnificent wines like this. It comes from the coastal town of Sanlúcar de Barrameda and the historic, acclaimed Barbadillo bodega (established 1821). Legend has it that back in the 19th century the owner bet his bodega in a high stakes game of cards. Thankfully for sherry lovers, he won the hand – and the then princely sum of 1,000 (‘mil’) pesetas. Fittingly, the wine this story gives its name to is also the stuff of legend. Sweet, but never cloying, with wonderful citrus notes and a clean, nutty finish. Serve cold as an apéritif, or at room temperature with sweet pastries. And don’t save it just for Christmas. Great sherry like this should be enjoyed all year round!
