The Wine
The first vine planted on the Hyland Estate was in 1971. 53 years later, the property has a reputation for exceptional Pinot Noir. All its vineyards are planted on red volcanic soil, which lends freshness and elegance to the wines. That and the elevation of the vineyards (c. 300 metres) and the cooling Pacific breeze which brings temperatures down and slows ripening. Owner Laurent Montalieu is a vineyard fanatic, always striving to produce “the ultimate expression of terroir.” They grow different clones of Pinot Noir and do separate bottlings, farming biodynamically too. Such exacting measures to ensure the finest wines. This Estate Pinot is a blend of different clones. Aged 9 months in fine French oak, this is a superb red to savour.
