The Spirit
Prohibition put an end to small-batch distilling in New York, but Tuthilltown Distillery have resurrected an Empire State classic with their Rye Whiskey. They’re a very hands-on operation, hand picking their rye and sourcing 90% of their raw materials within 10 miles of the distillery. Ralph Erenzo purchased the Tuthilltown Gristmill in the Hudson Valley in 2001 and gradually converted two granaries into a distillery. He and Brian Lee learned the art of distilling on the job, eventually taming the notoriously difficult rye grain with award winning results. From grain to glass, they take great care and pride in the whiskey. Since being named ‘Best Artisan Distiller’ by the American Distilling Institute in 2010, they have never looked back.
