The Wine
As its name suggests, this is the flagship Cuvée from Hambledon – the first English estate to produce wines commercially. That was in the 1950s after the estate’s owner Major-General Sir Guy Salisbury-Jones planted a vineyard in a spare field. A Francophile and a wine lover, he did a good job, and Hambledon’s wines won Golds and were served at important state occasions. Fast forward to the early 2000s, and a new start with a new owner, Ian Kellett. Ian planted Champagne grapes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, invested in a new winery and brought in one of Champagne’s best chefs de cave as winemaker, Hervé Jestin. Today their wines gain many awards. This Première Cuvée is a superb blend of Chardonnay and Pinots long aged on lees.
