The Wine
Gigondas is a village nestled in the hills of the southern Rhône and gives its name to one of the region’s best known reds. As Jancis Robinson MW notes, the southern Rhône offers “excellent value – the best wines are remarkably similar to Châteauneuf-du-Pape” – the region’s best and most famous wine. Clos des Tourelles is from the Perrin family, owners too of the southern Rhône’s flagship estate, Château de Beaucastel. This fabulous Gigondas property dates back to medieval times and lies just outside the village. Its ancient walled vineyard has superb sandy clay soils and from there, Marc Perrin selected grapes for this fine red. A mix from older and younger vines gives an ideal balance of fruit, intensity and complexity. Top with lamb.
