The Wine
Excelsior Estate has been making world-class for 160 years, since its foundation in Robertson in 1859, while their ancestor planted the first vine in 1697! Calcrete Chardonnay is one of their best yet. The grapes are from a special patch of earth – soil that shares much in common with Chablis. Many millions of years ago, both were under the sea. As the water receded, the fossil shells remained and today comprise a special limestone, they call calcrete. In a wine its presence results in a taut core of freshness, a style that Excelsior’s winemaker aptly calls ‘bottled lightning’! Like good Chablis, this fabulous Calcrete Chardonnay is unoaked, focusing instead on its dazzling lime-zipped freshness and apple fruit. A brilliant seafood wine.
