The Wine
First planted with vines in 1894, Elderton is today famous for producing some of Australia’s best wines. When Neil and Lorraine Ashmead looked to buy the property in 1979, the owner told them “buy the house and I'll give you the surrounding 72 acres of old vines for nothing”. It was a time when growers were encouraged to grub up old vineyards. Thankfully the Ashmeads didn’t, and saved the heirlooms. Today the family are regarded as a major force in rejuvenating the Barossa, and in 1993 won the top Jimmy Watson Trophy. This tremendous, powerful Cabernet uses grapes from vines at least 70 years old, which produce minute yields. Handmade every step, with fermentation and ageing in all new French oak, this impressive red will go the distance.
