The Wine
This is a rare bottle of Bernard Bouvier’s supreme Grand Cru, his Echézeaux, from a year described by the FT as “a seriously delicious vintage”. That’s despite frost damage – 80% of Bouvier’s vines here were damaged by frost. What escaped has produced grapes of superb poise and structure, and fruit for 10+ years’ ageing. Bernard is a third generation winemaker. His grandfather Henri founded the estate in 1910, handing it to son René in 1950. Each generation has added more vines, as they could afford it and as top spots in Gevrey Chambertin, Vosne Romanée, Fixin and Marsannay, as well as the Côte de Nuits, became available. They now have 17 hectares of vines of impressive maturity. All from the En Orveaux vineyard, this is great Burgundy.
