The Wine
There aren’t many Sancerres that would benefit from a decade of cellaring. La Côte de Bué from this great estate is proof for any doubters. Jean-Max Roger took over the family’s 17th century estate in 1970 and set about modernising it. He gained a reputation as being ahead of his time – the first to grass over vineyards in 1991 – green harvesting – always striving to improve quality. Decanter’s Jim Budd rates him among the very best producers. His La Côte de Bué is a star even in the Roger universe – a vineyard that took 25 years to restore and replant. It’s ideally southeast facing and steep. Clay rich soils promote a fuller body, a rounder style of wine as you have here. Drink now or cellar for 5+ years for a richer, more complex style.
