The Wine
Once the preserve of skiers en vacance in France’s Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, on the Swiss border, the wines of Savoie are a rare and delicious find in the UK. With just 2,000 hectares of vines, planted at altitude on mountain slopes, it produces only 0.5% of French wine and most of it is white. Bergeron is one of its top grapes – the same as the Rhône’s prized Roussanne, further south. This is an exceptional white from a family estate founded in 1950 by Adrien Vacher. The grapes are sourced from vines, grown high on the alpine-fresh Mont Granier slopes to ensure the wine has a tight core of mineral freshness to balance the notes of honey, toasted nuts and peach. A fine white to serve solo or with white meats, salmon or a creamy risotto.
