Diemersdal Pinotage Reserve 2017
Durbanville WO
Loading...
A gorgeous, hefty red using South Africa’s unique Pinotage grape. It’s a serious wine, using old vine grapes, all fermented in open top barrels with punch down. Ageing in French oak barrels adds to this tour de force of weighty black fruit and spice.

The Wine
Six generations of the Louw family, since 1885, have tended Diemersdal vines, and the estate itself has been in existence since 1698. There’s an inventory of wine barrels dated 1702. History aside, the Durbanville valley, with its backdrop of Table Mountain, is a top spot for viticulture. Granite and clay soils – both well drained and moisture absorbing – and rolling sea mists through the afternoon that cool the vines all contribute to the richness and balance of Diemersdal wines. At 15% this is a serious Pinotage. Half the grapes are from century old bush vines, half from 23 year old trellised vines, both providing dense flavour. 16 months in 60% new French oak adds a lavish layer of spicy vanilla to the bold black fruit. Tasty with lamb.
