The Wine
Croft is one of the best known names in port. It was founded over 300 years ago, in 1588, in York by the Thompson family. In 1736 John Croft joined the firm and has since lent it his name. Today Croft’s jewel in the crown is Quinta da Roêda. One of the Douro’s finest estates, it contains some of the region’s oldest vineyards, and is the main source of wine for Croft’s vintage ports. However, just occasionally in an exceptional year, it'll be bottled solo. 2004 was a hot dry vintage, with perfect conditions throughout; Roêda was so good, it was made into a single quinta release. It's rich, opulent with a structure that has allowed it to age many years. Delicious now solo, with nuts or cheese. Stand the bottle, then decant to avoid sediment.
