Carlos Martínez Bujanda is one of our longest-standing friends in Spain, his family one of the most respected in all Rioja. He fell in love with the ancient vines of La Mancha 30 years ago and this is his mellow, tobacco-spiced 8-year-old Reserva.

The Wine
From a family that's been making fine Rioja for 140 years, Carlos Martínez Bujanda knows about great barrel-matured reds. His grandfather started in Rioja in 1884, and a century later, Carlos and his siblings built a state-of-the-art cellar. This is when Tony Laithwaite first met the family, loved the wines and brought them to the UK. They have since won a huge haul of awards and are world renowned for their great wines. In the 1990s, Carlos discovered the ancient vines of La Mancha. He was so impressed, he built a state-of-the-art winery, Finca Antigua, there and is producing exciting wines like this. It's a luscious blend of Merlot (60%), Cabernet and Syrah, intensely flavoured thanks to old bush vines and aged in barrel for two years.
