The Wine
Enjoy the Cape’s new star red, served the way the locals like to drink it – chilled! It’s from the winemaker Leon Esterhuizen at the great Journey’s End winery, winner of numerous of awards … for its wines and its commendable work in the community too. Leon showed the wine to our buyer, Becca, on her last visit there and “it absolutely hit the spot” she said. The wine is made from pure Cinsault, a red grape used in the wines of Châteauneuf and southern France, and in Provence pinks to add savoury spice. The Financial Times called it “the unlikely hero of South Africa’s new wave”. In Leon’s hands, it’s a wine with soft raspberry and strawberry flavours with a tickle of spice and lovely freshness. Serve lightly chilled – perfect.
