High points all round from critics for this outstanding 2017 from Pessac Léognan. This small, under explored section of the Graves produces deep, minerally clarets and Pape Clément can boast one of the most distinguished pedigrees in all Bordeaux.

The Wine
Château Pape Clément was purchased as a country estate in 1300 by Bertrand de Goth, shortly before he became Pope Clement V. He moved the papacy to Avignon (to the universal approval of his fellow Frenchmen) and the wine produced on his estate there became known as Châteauneuf du Pape. Meanwhile, he handed the vineyards of Pape Clément over to the church, who kept them until the French Revolution. The estate is now managed by Bernard Magrez, who has been entrusted with bringing the estate’s wines up to their full potential. Antonio Galloni called this 2017 "fabulous", "dazzling intensity from start to finish". This fine red will mature for many years. Decant a couple of hours before serving and enjoy with plain roast lamb or beef.
