Saint-Emilion Grand Cru AOC
Loading...
From an historic, 17th-century estate, comes this mellow, 12-year-old Saint-Emilion. Michel Rolland is consulant there and has ensured a wine with elegance and character. Mature red fruits with hints of fruitcake and tobacco, long and elegant.

The Wine
Château Côte de Baleau was founded in 1643 and remained in the Reiffer family for nearly 400 years. It was a gift from King Louis XIV to the original Reiffer for his service as a loyal soldier. The estate only changed hands in 2013, when the Cuvelier family purchased it, with Matthieu Cuvelier, owner too of Clos Fourtet and Château Poujeaux, in overall charge. It lies just outside the medieval village, with 14 hectares of classified vineyards, planted on the prized limestone soils. In recent years, it has been elevated to Grand Cru Classé status. Merlot, supported by both Cabernets, it was aged 50% in new oak, which has added extra structure for ageing. 2011 was a vintage slow to come round, so the wine is now drinking beautifully.
