Château Bonalgue has a very illustrious following. “This over achieving estate is one of the most consistent performers in Pomerol. Always a well made, fleshy, succulent, hedonistic wine” – praise indeed from influential wine critic Robert Parker.

The Wine
Hugh Johnson OBE says: “The consensus is that Pomerols are the gentlest, richest and the more instantly appealing clarets.” Perhaps that’s why its top wines are pricier than the much grander First Growths of the Médoc. And while Château Bonalgue may not be in the same league as Pétrus or Le Pin, its generous, velvety wines bear all the hallmarks of classic Pomerol. The wine owes its lush, fleshy character to a Merlot-dominated blend, pepped up with a dash of Cabernet Franc. Eighteen months’ ageing in 50% new oak barrels adds further roundness and complexity. The property dates back to 1815, then was bought by the Bourotte family – still the owners today – in 1926. A great Pomerol from an excellent vintage, best decanted a few hours early.
