Au Bon Climat champions Old World winemaking in the New World to produce terrific Burgundian-styled wines. La Bauge uses two different clones of estate-grown Pinot Noir from two locations for complexity and balance, with ageing in new oak. Sublime.

The Wine
From its 1982 start, founder Jim Clendenen's aim was to make world-class Burgundian-style wines. He'd visited France in the mid 1970s and on his return, researched until he'd found the perfect spot in California – the ocean-cooled climate and marine soils of Santa Maria Valley, and within it, the Santa Rita Hills. 40 years later, the wines have a world-class reputation. These vineyards are ideal for growing grapes - hence the name 'Au Bon Climat' (a good climate). This Pinot Noir sources most of the grapes from their fabled Bien Nacido slopes, with the remainder from other premium estate vines. Handpicked grapes, whole cluster pressing and maturation in half-new French oak casks makes for a serious, ageworthy red. Decant early or cellar.
