The Wine
Ascención comes from one of Argentina’s oldest estates. It lies in Salta, a region with vineyards at 1,700 metres above sea level – some of the highest vineyards in the world. While alluding to these dizzying altitudes, Ascención is also the name of the daughter of the Spanish governor who founded Salta. Today the owners spare no expense in their global winemaking ventures and their flagship Argentine Malbec is rated over 90/100 by influential critic Robert Parker. Winemaker Thibaut Delmotte cool fermented the grapes for this white to bring out their aromatic character and citrusy freshness, while lees ageing adds complexity. With its grapey aromas and tangerine fruit, it makes a top apéritif, and is great, too, with herby fish dishes.

Torrontés goes particularly well with a spicy empanada, as characteristically Argentine as the tango
