The Wine
GSM might not sound classic, but the blend is a southern Rhône speciality. It stands for the three grapes which it comprises – Grenache and Shiraz from the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs and Mourvedre from Sellicks Beach. The Mediterranean-like weather patterns of the McLaren perfectly suit these varieties. By day bright sunshine brings ripeness while cooling sea breezes at night retain freshness. 2014 was a steady ripening year with rain until spring, then a mild dry summer allowing fruit to develop fresh yet intense character. A slow tick-over fermentation was followed by gentle basket pressing, and finally maturation in US and French oak barrels. Spicy, rich and creamy smooth, it’s a lovely wine to serve with lamb shanks or crispy duck.
