The Wine
Alentejo is a top spot for searching out some of Portugal’s greatest value, fruit laden wines. Rosés are a speciality. We found this gem at a small cellar, Adega de Redondo, whose shiny new winemaking equipment ensures thrillingly fresh, fruity flavours. Portugal has a wealth of unfamiliar yet fascinating grapes – this is a blend of Aragonez, a Portuguese name for Tempranillo, and Castelão. Both grow especially well in Alentejo, and thanks to investment and top winemaking talent their world class potential is now becoming more widely known. Albarrada was crafted by Pedro Hipólito in tiny amounts – most goes into his full flavoured reds – and is bursting with strawberry character. Lovely solo or with a warm goat’s cheese salad or chicken.
