The Spirit
Whisky fans beware – this smoky stunner could trip you up when nosed blind. Beguiling, peaty aromas cry out Islay, yet it hails from Girvan on the Firth of Clyde. And it’s very good indeed. After the initial release, Peter Gordon – great great grandson of William Grant – and Master Blender Brian Kinsman decided to notch up the peat content from 21 to 22 PPM (phenol parts per million). To counterbalance that, the sweetness was raised from 11 to 19 SPPM (sweetness PPM) and the results are striking. After ageing in ex-Baby Bourbon Hudson casks for nine months, for oaky sweetness and peaty dryness, the whisky is transferred to new American oak barrels to add extra layers of toasty vanilla. A gorgeous progression for the Ailsa Bay distillery.
