The Story Behind the Bottle

Maison Joseph Drouhin was established in 1880 and, for 140 years, “has been producing some of Burgundy’s highest-calibre wines” (Drinks Business).

Today it’s run by his four grandchildren, with Philippe Drouhin – who accompanied his father in the vineyards as a child – looking after the vines. A pioneer in sustainable viticulture, he converted the vineyards first to organic, then biodynamic production.

Philippe’s sister, Véronique Boss-Drouhin, is the winemaker and guardian of the Drouhin style. “It is my duty to respect the grapes that arrive in the winery in order to enhance the signatures of our precious and esteemed terroirs to their fullest potential,” she says.

Musigny Grand Cru is one of the jewels of Burgundy, nestled between two legends: Clos de Vougeot to the south and Échezeaux just over the hill. Its reds display a rare balance of power and grace – which is exactly what you’ll taste in this wine.

Charles Curtis MW of Decanter awards the Maison Joseph Drouhin Musigny Grand Cru an ‘outstanding’ 96 points and writes: “Drouhin’s Musigny is monumental wine … on the palate it opens up with a solid, dense plum and mulberry fruit, with great mineral complexity and a bit of spice.”

It’s approachable now but will be at its best between 2030 and 2050.
