Flavour Profile
Aluado has been one of our top-selling Black Reds for 15 years now. This new Grande Reserva is its crowning glory.
They said he was ‘aluado’ (‘moon-mad’) but winemaker José Neiva Correia has proven his doubters wrong. You see, inky black Alicante Bouschet is usually found in Portuguese red blends, there to add deep colour and black fruit flavours. Rarely is it seen on its own.
That didn’t deter José – a talented winemaker, credited by wine writer Tim Atkin as the man behind Portugal’s wine revolution. José saw potential in this dark Portuguese star and his conviction has paid off.
In top vintages, José makes a luxury edition of Aluado, using the ripest, juiciest grapes of the harvest and patiently maturing the wine in oak barrels to add depth and complexity. Most years his premium Aluado is declared to be of Reserva quality – a prestigious title awarded by a panel of the region’s top winemakers.
But this is the first time ever that it has been singled out as a Grande Reserva – the highest (and rarest) level of quality.
It’s a powerful, complex red wine with fragrant aromas of sweet spice, ripe berries and earthy undertones, followed by deep, smoky damson and black cherry fruit flavours, rich spices and savoury hints. A perfect partner for richly flavoured casseroles and roast beef or lamb.
