Único was a groundbreaking ‘Super-Spaniard’ when it first appeared in 1864 and remains Spain’s No.1 wine today. Writer Hugh Johnson calls Vega Sicilia Spain's “most prestigious wine estate: a legend for quality” and this 98-pt release bears this out.

The Wine
Vega-Sicilia was established in 1864 on limestone slopes high above the Duero river and 700 metres above sea level. It towers over other Spanish estates in more ways than one. Its visionary founder, Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, imported Bordeaux varieties to plant alongside local Tinto Fino (Tempranillo). In doing so he created this ‘Super-Spaniard’. Today Único’s winemaker is Xavier Ausás López de Castro. Único 2014 is made from the grapes of very low-yielding vines, some of the oldest in the region. Only free-run juice is used to ensure the gentlest of textures. Aged around six years in barriques then large foudres, and four in bottle, it is flawlessly smooth with an intoxicating perfume and sublime length. Decant early or cellar.
