The Wine
For three centuries now, San Leonardo has been the home of the Guerrieri Gonzaga family. Marchese Carlo took charge in the 1970s. He loved fine wines, particularly clarets, and decided to study oenology in Lausanne, with research trips to Bordeaux and Tuscany. He worked also with the creator of Sassicaia, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who became his mentor and helped him to plant his family's Trentino vineyards with the varieties of Bordeaux. The first vintage of their flagship red was released in 1982 and soon became one of the great reds of Italy. As Wine Advocate wrote, "Sassicaia and San Leonardo seem like brothers separated in childhood." Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère and Merlot, aged in barrel for 2 years ensures a very fine red.
