The Wine
Only planted with vines since 2000, Patagonia now has a stellar reputation for wine. The soil is light and stony, the sunlight is clear, and water from irrigation is plentiful, while biting winds result in small, thick-skinned berries. The Schroeder story is one of triumph over adversity. Having lost a fortune in debt-ridden Germany in the 1920s, Juan Schroeder emigrated and set up a farm in Argentina. Three-quarters of a century later, amidst the country’s 2001 debt crisis, the family established their now hugely successful estate in Patagonia. In the last 15 years it has won many awards, including ‘Winery of the Year’ in 2006. The strong Patagonian winds produce a rich style of Pinot Noir, aged here in oak. Decant and enjoy with lamb.
