Captain Frank Edgcumbe-Rendle took matters into his own hands during the Second World War, when he realised troops were being sent second-rate gin. He blended his own. A pink version so he could see if it had been watered down! This is his recipe.

The Spirit
Christopher Rendle says his father complained bitterly about the wartime gin supplied to officers and knew that there was only one thing to do. While serving with the 16th Light Cavalry Indian Army he was well placed to source natural spices and hibiscus (to give a pink hue) so he created his own gin, which soon became known as ‘Rendle’s Pinkers’. Finding the recipe among his father’s journals, Christopher decided it must be revived. He describes his gin as “born in England, created in India and refined in California” – the latter being where, after much searching, he found the ideal distillery to make it. Indian spice gives a generous warmth to the taste, with a bright citrus tang coming from Indian coriander. Perfect with tonic and ice.
