Poggio Salvi Brunello di Montalcino 1979

Brunello is a special clone of Sangiovese, nurtured in Montalcino, an enclave of Tuscany south of the region’s other big star, Chianti. Its skins tend to be thicker and the wines are renowned for their high acidity and tannins. This enables the finest examples to age for decades. This rare 1979 is from an estate that has been making wine since the 16th century. It lies in the south of Montalcino, looking out over the Tyrrhenian Sea. Vineyards at altitudes between 300 and 500 metres and blown by coastal breezes are particularly healthy. Don’t expect bright fresh fruit – after nearly 40 years, it’s showing more complex, subtle notes of spice, oak, dried cherry and leather. Stand upright to allow any sediment to drop and serve with game pie.
