The Wine
Clinging to a rocky hilltop, the medieval village of Montalcino provides a picturesque view of Tuscany. It is the centre for one of Italy’s most magnificent reds – Brunello di Montalcino. These are wines that can age for years. This one hails from Poggio Antico, the Brunellos of which regularly feature in Wine Spectator’s ‘Top 100 Wines of the Year’. Respectful of tradition, the winery makes its Brunello in the time honoured method, ageing for three years in large oak barrels. This lends the finished wine notes of cedar, leather and spice to complement the rich black fruit and lifted floral character – all held together with fine tannins. Open two or three hours early and decant before enjoying with red meats, venison or firm cheeses.
