The Wine
Opus One was established in 1978, a joint venture between two legendary wine figures, the late Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild. The aim was to create a Californian wine in the mould of a Médoc First Growth. It became an immediate international hit and in 1981 a case of it was sold at auction for $24,000. The iconic Opus One winery, designed by Johnson, Fain & Pereira, was completed in 1991 and is as famous as the wine. The 2019 is a classic Médoc blend – Cabernet-dominated, with Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and a twist of Malbec, aged in French oak for 19 months. It has amazing rich, layered flavours of espresso, dark chocolate, undergrowth and dense fruit. Decant early or, best, cellar.

The purity of fruit is really something else here, with currants and fresh flowers. Fantastic length
