The Wine
Roche de Bellene is the project of Nicolas Potel, whose father Gérard ran the renowned Domaine de la Pousse d’Or. Gérard’s untimely death meant the estate had to be sold, but Nicolas’ new venture, founded in 2008, received instant acclaim. The Times wrote of him: “When Nicolas Potel set up shop, he was clearly destined for the top.” Nicolas has focused his efforts on creating expressive, organic wines from the fruit of old vines (up to 100+ years old), as well sourcing grapes from like-minded growers. In the latter category, Les Charmes is the largest of Chambolle’s Premiers Crus. With south-easterly slopes, the vines enjoy extensive sunshine allowing ample time for ripening. A superb, expressive Pinot Noir with delicate floral notes.
