The Wine
Ischia is a remote island just off southern Italy's Campania and has been growing vines since 7,000BC! First with the Greeks, then the Romans, who named it Enaria – land of wine. Its mild Mediterranean climate, volcanic soils, tufa stone and cooling sea breezes all help in producing fine red and white wines. Most of its vineyards are clustered around the lower mountain slopes of Mount Epomeo and its steep terraces that edge towards the sea. Fourth-generation Lucia Monti runs the winery, founded in the 1700s by her great grandfather, Pietro Monti. Biancolella is its best-known white grape, indigenous to the island too. Cool fermented and aged on lees, the wine has a creamy rounded texture with delicate fruit. Ideal with seafood or solo.
