The Wine
Lying on France's eastern edge, Alsace is famous for its exquisite, pure fruit wines. One of its finest domaines is Bott-Geyl, founded in 1795 by Jean-Martin Geyl and today run by Jean-Christophe Bott and his wife Valérie. Jean-Christophe took over in 1993, having worked in Meursault, Germany and the New World. He converted to organic in 2000, then biodynamic in 2002, uses wild yeasts for fermentation and firmly believes in minimal intervention in the cellar. He has 80 parcelles of vines over his 15 hectares, including six Grands Crus. Sonnenglanz is one of the best. With enticing honey, pineapple and grapefruit aromas and lush spiced fruit with a fresh edge, this is a fine Grand Cru. Recommended with duck with orange or truffle omelette.
