The Wine
This wine, classified ‘Bourgogne Blanc’, is nonetheless from Puligny and indeed displays some of Puligny’s renowned characteristics, not least a lovely nectarine, cream and subtly nutty character. Despite centuries of wine growing history, Château de Puligny-Montrachet only rose to its current heights with the arrival of Etienne de Montille in 2001. Etienne, whose father inherited the vineyards in the 1950s, brought a fresh approach, reducing yields and working in the cellar to reduce the presence of oak in the wines. Clos du Château is a small walled vineyard within the grounds of the estate. A terrific value introduction to white Burgundy from one of its prominent estates. Serve lightly chilled with pan-fried scallops, risotto or poultry.
