The Wine
Château Fonbel has a history dating back to when the Romans were cultivating grapes in the Saint-Émilion area. It's modern story began in 1971 when Alain Vauthier bought it, owner of the renowned Château Ausone. Indeed, its 16 hectares of mostly Merlot vines are planted not far from this estate. It can also boast high plantings of Carmenère and Petit Verdot, which accounts in part for the charm of the wine. Made by the same team as Ausone and run today by Alain's daughter, Pauline, the wine is fermented in stainless-steel and aged in 30% new oak for 10 months. The result, according to Wine Advocate, is this lovely wine: "bursting with notes of cherries, berries, petals and anise, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and charming".
