The Wine
For the apogee of fine drinking fizz, you can't do better than Vintage Champagne, while the Premier Cru stamp signifies one that's even finer. Paul Goerg 2009 is a stunner. It's from a house founded in 1950 by eight grower families, who joined together to pool their resources and produce truly outstanding Champagnes. Word of mouth success means the cellar now tends 120 hectares of Premier Cru vineyards around Champagne, centring on the Côte des Blancs. Here, the Chardonnay grape is king. The chalky soils of Vertus lend a rich, yet refreshing mineral quality to this wine, while nine years’ ageing on its lees adds considerably to its brioche and citrus complexity. Superb for celebrations; lovely with seared scallops, canapés or on its own.

From the best vintage in Champagne for 30 years, this is a superb, elegant fizz. Delicious now
